Avery label sizes chart: US Letter and A4 codes
The product code on the box tells you everything about the sheet: label size, how many fit, and the layout. Here are the common ones in one place, in inches and millimetres.
Short answer: Avery 5160 (and its inkjet twin 8160) is 2⅝ × 1 in, 30 labels per US Letter sheet. Avery L7160 is 63.5 × 38.1 mm, 21 labels per A4 sheet. Four-digit codes starting with 5 or 8 are US Letter sheets; codes starting with L or J are A4 sheets.
How to read an Avery code
Avery prints a product code on every box and usually on the sheet edge too. The code identifies the layout, not the colour or finish, so you can use it to pick the right template.
- 5xxx – US Letter sheets made for laser printers (5160, 5163, 5167…).
- 8xxx – the same layouts made for inkjet printers. 8160 has exactly the same geometry as 5160, 8163 the same as 5163, and so on.
- L7xxx – A4 sheets for laser printers, sold in the UK and Europe (L7160, L7163…).
- J8xxx – the inkjet versions of the A4 layouts. J8160 matches L7160, J8163 matches L7163.
Other prefixes and longer codes exist for special finishes such as clear, weatherproof or extra-strong adhesive. They often share a layout with one of the codes below, and the box normally says which one it is compatible with. Many other brands also print “compatible with Avery 5160” or similar on the pack.
The layout is what matters: once you know the label size, how many columns and rows, and the margins, you can print on any brand. Our Letter vs A4 guide explains why a 5160 template cannot simply be used on an L7160 sheet.
US Letter sheets (8½ × 11 in)
| Code | Typical use | Label size | Per sheet | Layout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5160 / 8160 | Address | 2⅝ × 1 in (66.7 × 25.4 mm) | 30 | 3 × 10 |
| 5161 | Address | 4 × 1 in (101.6 × 25.4 mm) | 20 | 2 × 10 |
| 5162 / 8162 | Address | 4 × 1⅓ in (101.6 × 33.9 mm) | 14 | 2 × 7 |
| 5163 / 8163 | Shipping | 4 × 2 in (101.6 × 50.8 mm) | 10 | 2 × 5 |
| 5164 / 8164 | Shipping | 4 × 3⅓ in (101.6 × 84.7 mm) | 6 | 2 × 3 |
| 5167 / 8167 | Return address | 1¾ × ½ in (44.5 × 12.7 mm) | 80 | 4 × 20 |
| 5195 | Return address | 1¾ × ⅔ in (44.5 × 16.9 mm) | 60 | 4 × 15 |
| 5168 | Large shipping | 3½ × 5 in (88.9 × 127 mm) | 4 | 2 × 2 |
| 5165 | Full sheet | 8½ × 11 in | 1 | 1 × 1 |
The layout column is columns × rows: 5160 has three labels across and ten down. Counting for “Start at label #” always runs left to right along the top row first, then the next row down.

Built into the label template generator: 5160, 8160, 5161, 5162, 5163, 5164, 5167, L7160, L7162, L7163 and L7165. For every other code in these tables, choose Custom and type in the numbers as described below.
Setting up a sheet that isn't in the list
A template needs ten numbers: page width and height, label width and height, columns and rows, top and left margin, and the gaps between columns and rows. The first six come straight from the tables above. The last four you either find on the packaging or work out.
Work out the margins
Almost all Avery sheets centre the grid on the page, so the margins follow from the other numbers:
- Left margin = (page width − columns × label width − (columns − 1) × column gap) ÷ 2
- Top margin = (page height − rows × label height − (rows − 1) × row gap) ÷ 2
Example for L7160: (210 − 3 × 63.5 − 2 × 2.5) ÷ 2 = 7.25 mm left margin, and (297 − 7 × 38.1) ÷ 2 = 15.15 mm top margin, with no gap between rows. For 5160: (8.5 − 3 × 2.625 − 2 × 0.125) ÷ 2 = 0.1875 in left margin, and (11 − 10 × 1) ÷ 2 = 0.5 in top margin.
Measure the gaps with a ruler
Gaps are the part people most often get wrong, because they are small. Don't measure the gap directly. Instead measure the pitch: the distance from the left edge of the first label to the left edge of the second. Then:
- Column gap = horizontal pitch − label width
- Row gap = vertical pitch − label height (often zero: rows on address sheets usually touch)
Measuring pitch across several labels is even more accurate. On a sheet with five columns, measure from the left edge of the first label to the left edge of the fifth and divide by four. A 0.5 mm error per label adds up across a row, so this matters more on sheets with many small labels such as L7651.
Check before you print
The generator warns you if the columns or rows don't fit on the page with the numbers you entered. If it fits, print one page on plain paper and hold it over a label sheet against a window. Our alignment guide covers what to do if it's slightly off.
Which size should I buy?
- Envelopes and letters: 5160 or L7160 hold a name and three address lines at about 10–11 pt.
- Longer addresses or a company line: the 4 in / 99.1 mm wide labels (5161, 5162, L7162, L7163) give you room for longer lines without shrinking the text.
- Parcels: 5163 or L7165 leave space for a larger font, a reference number or a sender line.
- Return addresses, jar lids, file tabs: 5167, 5195 or L7651. Keep to two or three short lines at 6–8 pt.
Label dimensions are the nominal values printed on the packaging. Individual batches can vary by a fraction of a millimetre, so if a layout is critical, measure one sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Is Avery 5160 the same as 8160?
Same layout: 30 labels of 2⅝ × 1 in, three across and ten down, on Letter paper. 5160 is made for laser printers and 8160 for inkjet printers. Use the same template for both.
Is L7160 the A4 version of 5160?
Not exactly. Both are three-across address labels, but L7160 labels are 63.5 × 38.1 mm (21 per A4 sheet) while 5160 labels are 2⅝ × 1 in, about 66.7 × 25.4 mm (30 per Letter sheet). A 5160 template will not line up on an L7160 sheet. See the Letter vs A4 guide.
How many labels are on an Avery L7651 sheet?
65 labels of 38.1 × 21.2 mm, in 5 columns and 13 rows on A4. It isn't a preset in the generator, so choose Custom and enter those values; the margin formula in this guide gives a starting point.
My label box has a code that isn't listed here. What do I do?
Look on the box for “compatible with” or “same size as” another code, or read the label size and count from the packaging. Then pick Custom in the generator and enter the page size, label size, columns, rows, margins and gaps.
